More About the Auvergne Rhone Alpes Region of France

The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region boasts a wide array of destinations, with the city of Lyon, France’s capital of gastronomy, Mont Blanc, Europe’s highest point, the Drôme and Ardèche departments, reminiscent of Provence, and Auvergne with its lakes, Romanesque churches and volcanoes.

Located in the heart of France, the Auvergne-Rhône Alpes region offers something for everyone with its three main cities of Lyon, Grenoble and St. Etienne, plus the area that includes the French suburbs of the Swiss city of Geneva. North of Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, in south-east France is the Auvergne-Rhône Alpes region, sharing its eastern borders with Italy and Switzerland. The region, and in particular the Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments, is home to some of the most spectacular scenery in France. Mountains rise steadily from Lake Geneva and keep climbing to the year-round ice-capped tip of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in Europe. In the winter it is a white-washed world of snow capped peaks and icy lakes. In the summer months it is an entirely different place with lowland hiking through flower-filled meadows or swimming in the lakes. It consists of 12 departments:

Ain (01) | Allier (03) | Ardèche (07) | Cantal (15) | Drôme (26) | Isère (38) | Loire (42) | Haut-Loire (43) | Puy-de-Dôme (63) | Rhône (69) | Savoie (73) | Haute-Savoie (74)

The region boasts 90 Michelin star chefs including eight awarded three stars, 10 origin-protected vineyards including 3 internationally renowned names such as the Beaujolais, Côtes du Rhône and Savoie wines and it the largest PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) cheeseboard in France with 21 cheeses and two cheese routes.

The region boasts no less than 10 Unesco sites including the historic city of Lyon, lying between the rivers Rhone and Saône. The old city has an architectural and cultural heritage spanning over two thousand years.  Clermont-Ferrand nestled at the bottom of the volcanoes, Grenoble, the hometown of Stendhal and a city encircled by mountains.  St-Etienne is the only UNESCO Design city in France, and Valence with the old city and its pedestrian shopping streets.  Chambéry, a city of water with its medieval centre built on stilts, Le Puy-en-Velay, a city of pilgrimage and the Chemin de Santiago de Compostella and also Vienne with its Gallo-Roman ruins. One of the most prettiest towns in the region is Annecy, capital of the Haute-Savoie, with its colonnaded streets and the tributaries of the Canal du Thiou with railings overflowing with geraniums.
